Dissection of Fish

Fifth graders of DPS Nashik explored the anatomy of a fish today in the classroom. Mrs.Rekha O R led the dissection of mackerel, a local and sustainable fish. Students took note of external features, like the lateral line that can sense movement in the water, and looked at scales and pectoral fins under magnifying lenses. Then, working in small groups, they lifted the operculum and  observed gills. They identified the pectoral, pelvic, anal, dorsal, and caudal fins. Students observed the arrangement of the scales on fish. They learned the scales, which are embedded in the tough skin, protect the surface of the body and are arranged in a well ordered pattern of longitudinal and diagonal rows.
